Once Upon a December

If I was back in Norway now, having to deal with cold weather, rain and snow, Anastasia would be my number one source of inspiration this fall and winter. Over-sized coats, large scarfs, men’s boots, fingerless gloves and a uniformed cap, all Russian. With some hints of the Tsar royalty underneath, like decorated capes and dresses in dark red, purple, royal blue, emerald green and golden details.

Watched the movie again last week, and felt all sorts of childish. I loved this movie when I was younger. Anastasia was/is the perfect tomboy.

Who is your style icon for this fall/winter season?

The weaving – what do you think?

It was time for a make-over, something new to make my blog be ready for the new season. Cleanin’ out my closet and whatnot. And while I am at it I was wondering if you had anything you wanted to say about the layout, along the lines of hot or not, kewl or fewl, in or out? What do you like about this one, what do you feel is missing, what doesn’t work at all, etcetera.

Hope you’ve enjoyed a nice week-end! I hear the Christmas commercials are back on TV in Norway, and as December is growing closer I do have to admit that I am starting to miss the snow..

Figured I’d do a modern hippie-styled something today, in accordance with the general trend of doing everything the hippie way. Spent most of the morning on the lanai doing homework (yeah, they wont stop giving us more of those), before I ventured out into the wold to join the rest of the Norwegians (or at least a good 30 % of them) at a BBQ in the Fort De Russy park.

I got complaints from some of you that I need to stop hanging out with the Norwegian people and get some American friends, and I am, it just takes a lot more time to get to know people from scratch (i.e. Americans) than it does with the Norwegians. This is mostly because we all have some mutual connection from back home (or at least most of us do) that complements the whole friends of friends-connection. But I do have a couple of non-Norwegian (or non-Scandinavian for that matter) friends here, and I am social-ish with my class mates.

But yeah, I’ll stop making excuses and try to make some effort instead. I just need to find my people.

Bad television is the reason for this

On my way to the bus yesterday I was the victim of a “bad television is the reason for this”-moment. As I was waiting at the crosswalk this 40-something man next to me started asking me how I was doing, what my day had been like so far, etcetera. I answered politely, but when he asked me what I was doing tonight I told him that I would be “sleeping” and walked away. 30 seconds later I hear someone calling out my name and there he is, standing right next to me with a mock-seductive smile on his face, telling me that: “I was thinking, I don’t want to wait another 6 months for the next time I run into you so I was wondering if you would want to go out and have a drink with me later.”

Ew. You’re old enough to my father, man. This is not a love at first scenario.

What is wrong with this world ?

Gold and blue

On my cravings-list for November (or maybe Christmas wish list): The YSL clutch in dark blue, gold glittery stuff,  golden accessories, big watches, the Chloé sandals.

Awkward. – just discovered this tv-series about a week ago and finished season 1 in around 5 days. This is an awkward teenage series that is actually funny awkward and not American Pie-awkward. The show revolves around the life of Jenna Hamilton, a social nobody in high school up until she has a freak accident that looks like a suicide, and become known as “That Girl”. We follow her through her life at high school, her crush on the school beau (who actually likes her back from the beginning this time, but refuses to be seen with her because he’s cool and she’s not), her relationship with her friends, skitches (skanky bitches) and her mother who acts more of a teenager than Jenna does.

Assumption is the mother of all screwups.

The Hunger Games - Read the book yesterday, after watching the movie trailer (and also after several recommendations from some of you) and was pleasantly surprised. Not that it’s a pleasant book, far from it. The main plot takes place in post-apocalyptic country of Panem, built in the ruins of North America, after a war that left the wealthy Capitol district in charge, ruling like dictators over the twelve surrounding, poorer districts. The Hunger Games are an invention of the Capitol, part reality series, part tool to control the poorer districts, all survival of the fittest. Katniss Evergreen represent her district, together with a baker’s son named Peeta, and together they need to find a way to survive, because there are 24 contestants, kill or be killed, and the last one standing survives.

It’s not a fair comparison really. Gale and I were thrown together by a mutual need to survive. Peeta and I know the other’s survival means our own death.

The world is changing, we are soon (or have already passed) 7 billion people on this earth, looking at a the start of a new global financial crisis, fighting hunger, poverty & wars across continents, one of the safest capitals in the world and my home the past 3 years is experience a massive wave assault rapes and violence, and the thing that drove me to tears today was the fact that I’ve been living without my iPhone for 7 days. Really? Really? There are so many things in this world, heck even in my own life that I could cry over, but the one thing that actually push me over the edge is a life without a phone. I am embarrassed.

Apple, AT&T & Telenor combined can’t seem to figure out what’s wrong and they all blame each other while I am sitting here completely lost. Do you have any idea how isolated you feel without a cell phone? Multiply that by two hundred and you’ve got me. Like my roommate said yesterday; “I have never seen anyone use their smartphone as much as you do. It’s unbelievable that you’re still sane.” Well not the last part, I added that, but it’s true, it is a wonder I haven’t gone mental yet.

I’m going to go drink some beer and watch Awkward now. Brilliant tv-series btw. But more on that later. I need to continue being grumpy for another 12-17 hours or so. See you on the other side.

Jenny 3.0

Jenny Skavlan is launching her third collaboration with BIKBOK on November 17th. Personally I was a fan of her last collection (and bought the black pants you might remember from this outfit, or maybe not), and I like the preview of this even better. I want the entire outfit, including the collar and the shoes. Too bad we don’t have BikBok in Hawaii. The full preview of the collection will be out on Monday, but until then you can follow Jenny’s blog here.

What do you think?

Wheel of the Zodiac: Aries

A couple of days ago I opened the mail box to find a brown paper-package, containing a small bracelet from Oslo-based brand Su Misura, delicate, golden and with a picture of Aries. I discovered the brand via Celine’s blog, and bullied Maja into buying this astrological sign-bracelet for me about a week ago. I love the vintage-feel it gives off, like it’s a remnant from a century long gone.

If you want one for yourself you can visit their website right here (or their store in Oslo).

In 2004 I started to write down what books I read in order to keep track of them all. Since 2006 I have gathered them here instead of in my notebook and they serve as a reminder of how I should read more and compete to beat my old “record”. You can find the complete list here.
