Q&A

14 comments - September 13, 2011 4:09 PM - category: Life in Hawaii, Q&A

Did this in Norwegian, but if you want to read it anyways do what I always do when battling language barriers; use and abuse Google Translate.

Nei, workin’ on it.

Bor du alene i leid leilighet?

Go – go – go.

what do you study? well. eh.

I get a lot of questions about what it is I study, and it can be hard to keep track when you only get a small peek into the mess that will result in a bachelors degree in English Literature in June. So I thought I could answer the most frequently asked questions:

1. I gather from your blog that you study film/ music/ fashion/ literature/ psychology/ political science/art history, and am thinking of applying to [insert one of aforementioned subjects], would you recommend it?

To clear up the mess: I am currently finishing my bachelor’s degree in English Literature. Two years ago I started on a bachelor in Political Science (in addition to Literature), started on a double-major as they call it in English-speaking countries, but I decided to quit after 3 semesters because it wasn’t what I expected it to be like (too dry for the immature and at times 14 year old me). In addition to this I have taken one psychology class as an additional course on my degree (you have to choose 4 extra courses that are somewhat related to your degree in what they call “40-group”), and I am now taking 3 art history subjects to fill up the requirements for my degree.

My film/music/fashion-related musings come from pure obsession during those few hours I get of free time.

2.Are your lectures in English or Norwegian?

My literature courses are in English, but the rest (political science, art history, etc) are in Norwegian.

3. You’ve mentioned something about going to the States to study. What are you going to be doing and where are you going?

I want to be a journalist, so I am hoping to take a bachelor’s degree in journalism in New York, Boston, San Francisco or Los Angeles. I have applied to some of the best schools in the US, so I am crossing my fingers and toes for a nice and heavy acceptance letter by the end of April. Pretty please?

NOW, school. And it’s snowing outside. Bummer.

Nora:

What places are on your list of recommended coffee places in Oslo?

Kaffebrenneriet is a safe bet always, and I am very fond of Steam, Colletts Café and Bare Jazz and  as well.

Do you have any tips for those of us who feel that they are already drowning in school work?

I am desperate for such advice myself at the moment, but putting my TV in the basement was the best decision I ever made. Taking it back out again, not so much… Without TV I got so much work done, it was absolutely amazing. And yeah! Always bring a book from the curriculum with you, it’s amazing how much reading you can get done while waiting on the bus, sitting on the bus, in class while waiting for it to start or in the recess, etc.

Favorite drink?

Lynhcburg Lemonade. One of my best friends has worked as a bartender, so although I prefer beer and wine to the sugar bombs, I have been forced to discover a couple of favorites, Lynchburg Lemonade being one of them. Raspberry Mohitos from Frk Larsen in Kristiansand, or a plain Gin & Tonic works as well.

Amelie:

Where do like to hang-out (cafe, bar, nightclub, etc)?

I am a big fan of Bugges on Grünerløkka for lunch, dinner or just a cup of coffee. Villa Paradiso is another favorite. When I go out I usually end up at Fisk&Vilt, Blå or Fugazi. Or Emil&Samuel on those rare occasions when people force me to go there. If I am out rolling with my gay guys, Et Glass is the place to be. ;)

I f you could have dinner with 3 persons (alive or dead) of your choice, who would it be?

Jim Morrison, because I love his music.
Platon, to discuss philosophy and play feminist.
JK Rowling, because her books are magic.

What is your favorite scent and perfume?

The best thing in the world is the smell of waffles or freshly baked bread. And I wish someone could invent a perfume that could resemble that smell, with the warmth of the smell and that special softness which is hard to describe. Until then I am content wearing my DKNY – Be Delicious perfume.

Have you ever experienced anything in life that was so fantastic that you would want to relive it if you had the chance?

No.

Favorite movie?

Star Wars, The Mists of Avalon, The Boondock Saints, Lord of the Rings, What’s Eating Gilbert Grape?, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas and Fight Club are at the top of the list at the moment. Also love every single film made by Tim Burton featuring Johnny Depp, the two of them make a magical combination.

What is your favorite song at the moment?

Peter Bjorn And John – I’m Losing My Mind.

What kind of guys do you like?

I am very fond of the intelligent, handsome, dark type. Stereotype you say? Well.. I like guys to have certain geek-ish qualities, while still being very apt socially, and I definitely prefer the types that can like long nights containing red wine and some absurd movie on TV. Preferably they must like me as well. Not found many of those so far..

What do you feel about drugs?

Listen to your mother, don’t do drugs.

If I had given you 200 kr NOW, what would you have bought?

Pancake mix, whipped cream, chocolate and hot cocoa. CRAVINGS!

Mariam:

What is your favorite healthy food to snack on?

Don’t really eat that much healthy snack food, I just have a mean tendency to chose chocolate, popcorn, chips, cakes, cookies or other sugar-filled treats always. Sugar is definitely my drug of choice. But when I occasionally do eat some healthy snacks I prefer carrots or rutabaga sticks with dip. Or mango.

Do you have a favorite recipe that you keep going back to? What is it?

The easiest there is: pasta + tomato sauce (+ chicken) + sea salt&pepper. So incredibly delicious, and a good combination of what I usually need: something cheap (the ingredients cost nothing at all) + something that is easy to put together.

What is your favorite online store?

Asos.com is a favorite, although customs are big, bad and expensive when you live in Norway. To my student economy anyhow. But they do have a lot of nice things, and the prices aren’t bad, just remember to add the cost of customs before you order anything ;)

How in the world do you balance school and fun? You seem to be an expert at this.

I’m not sure. At the moment I don’t really feel like an expert. But I think it might be a combination of being very good at being effective under pressure, and not having the ability to say no to a party. ;)

Your hair is so long, shiny, thick, and healthy. What is your hair-care routine?

Thank you ! I am blessed with healthy and thick hair, but damaged it pretty badly a couple of years ago when I dyed my hair black (or the stupid hair dresser did, for a hair show. I did not approve), and then went to painful lengths to get my original color back. Luckily it’s nearly back to normal again now. But anyways, I wash my hair 3 times a week, using Wella Brilliance Shampoo and Balsam for colored and thick hair. Other than that I use very little products in my hair. I recently got a hair brush that has saved my life, Satin Hair from Braun, which “effectively tames frizz and flying hair for tangible smoothness”. You can read more about it here, because if I continue talking I might turn into a TV shop commercial at the blink of an eye.

Do you have a beauty secret?

Smile? Less is more when it comes to make-up. More girls (and women) should take that to their hearts, personally I should try to ignore it at times. Loads of eye shadow AND lip color is too much. Chose one area to highlight.

M.H.:

How come you haven’t created a facebook group for your blog?

I don’t really see a point to it, bloglovin’ tells people whenever I have updated the blog and I have my twitter account if I want to share things that are too short for a blog post. If someone wants to make a fan page for me, I will take that as a great compliment, but I do not currently have any plans of making one myself.

***

Karina:

What budget/average priced + quality digital camera would you recommend ?

I am in love with my Canon G11 (might not seem like I am at times when I complain about not owning a SLR), but I am not sure what price range one would consider average. The G11 cost around 3500 NOK. Can also recommend Canon s90, which is compact but very good. I am a Canon girl, always have been, so I actually do not know that much about the other brands. But I am a big fan of sending emails to the support center at Canon to ask for advice on which camera to buy.

Miriam:

How tall are you?

Somewhere around 1.73 cm. According to Helene I am 1.70, but we don’t trust her so.. My passport says that I am 1.73 cm.

Where do you live?

Oslo, Norway. Cold place, polar bears roam through the streets and everything. The Japanese tourist believe that anywho.

Favorite food?

Like everyone else I am an avid fan and consumer of sushi, but my dad’s home made Italian-styled pizzas are a favorite as well. The caesar salad (without dressing) my sister makes with home-made whole wheat croutons taste delicious, but nothing in the world really beats the taste of sea scallops.

Favorite blogs?

I have discovered a lot of  new blogs the last few m0nths, but my two absolute favorite blogs are the blogs of Columbine Smille and Emma Elwin. It’s fun to see how they are getting more and more attention lately, and I think it is absolutely well-deserved, both girls have a sense of style that I can only envy them. Have a lot of other favorites as well, and you can find most of them right H E R E.

The Western Wall, Old City of Jerusalem.

Adriana:

How many countries have you visited?

Hehe. I know I suggested this question myself, but it was actually a difficult one to answer. Decided to make a list, so here goes: Sweden, Denmark, England, France, Monaco, Netherlands, Germany, Poland, Switzerland, Czech Republic, Italy, Greece, Cyprus, Turkey, Israel, Palestine, French Polynesia, various islands in the Caribbean, USA and the Maldives. Which is 20.

What is your favourite fruit?

Mango.

Which book made you cry lately?

I don’t recall having been moved to tears by a book since I finished the last Harry Potter book. I might have, but I can’t remember it. The 3 last Harry Potter books made me an emotional wreck, first Sirius, then Dumbledore and in the last book just about everyone (Hedwig, Mad-Eye Moody, Dobby, Snape, Tonks, Lupin, Fred ++). Even now I can’t really identify what makes JK Rowling’s books that amazing, but there’s something about them that makes me re-read them at least once a year.

What is your favorite place on earth?

I don’t really have a favorite place, I have too many different sides of my personality to settle with one place in particular. One moment I would say that I love sitting alone on the pier watching the water, then the next moment I would want nothing else in the world than roam the streets of Istanbul or Paris with a bunch of friends.

Coffee or Tea?

Coffee. Black. No sugar, no milk, nothing but a simple black coffee.

Why did you start to blog?

Because I had so much I wanted to say, and write, and share with others, and not enough people to share it with. Started my first blog in 2003, but that was more of a home page thing where I could work on and develop my web design skills, then I started my first real blog in 2004-2005, in the style of a school diary. Embarrassing to read it a few years later, so it’s all deleted now.

Edona:

What is your favorite chocolate?

Festkaramell. Or just plain milk chocolate.

How does it feel to live alone so far away from your family?

Great. I love living alone, and I have never been the kind of person who gets home sick. As long as I can call them whenever I want or need to, I see them often enough to be content with that. :)

***

Vibeke:

Can you show us some pictures of your apartment?

I have some old pictures here, and I have a plan involving new pictures, but I need to clean up before I can take any pictures, you don’t want to see the mess that is my place right now.

Do you have a boyfriend?

Eternally single.

***

Tatiana:

Can you recommend any good restaurants or cafees in Oslo?

Have made a guide to Oslo right H E R E.

***

Tone Bø:

Do you regret moving to Oslo?

Not at all, best decision I ever made. I think it is very important to move away from your hometown, to experience living on your own, getting to know a new place and new people.

At the Filippa K store opening – September 2010.

metallicatrollet:

What inspires you?

People who dare to do whatever they can to reach their goals. Even if all odds are against them.

What magazines do you read?

I don’t really read that many magazines, but when I do I love the Danish magazines COVER and Eurowoman, as well as i-D, Numéro, Italian Vogue, Vixen Magazine, Costume and Interview. Especially Numéro (every version of it) , who have the best editorials.

What are the pros and cons of having such a well-known blog?

I don’t really feel that my blog is that well-known, so everything that I am invited to and given is really just a little unreal to me still. It’s fun, albeit a little embarrassing when I get recognized on the street. So far I have yet to experience any downsides to it, or at least not any major issues. I have had issues with people I’ve known earlier that seem to be offended somehow by the fact that I blog, and make fun of me for it behind my back, but as I can’t really see why it should be something to make fun of anyone about I don’t really care.

Ida & me – Eiffel Tower – Paris – April 2010.

Stephanie:

What sort of (summer) jobs have you had in the past?

I have not really had that many summer jobs, but spent one summer driving around in a boat selling sørlands chips. I prefer to have a real summer vacation doing absolutely nothing at our cabin. And I don’t need any money to do nothing at all ;) My first year in Oslo I worked in a book store, but I decided to quit when I started to study political science in addition to English literature, because I’d rather focus on school now (we’ve all got to work a lot eventually, so let’s not rush it).

Do you live alone in your flat (at the moment)?

Yes.

Your skin glows, what products do you use?

I’m so bad when it comes to my skin, but luckily for me I don’t use too much make-up (mineral foundation and mascara mostly). The only skin care I use is L’Oreal Perfect Clean Scrub, mostly because it smells delicious and the little scrubbing-thing that comes with it feels fantastic on your skin. :P

If you didn’t live in Norway, where would you like to live?

London or Paris. Or maybe New York. Awfully cliché, I know, but there’s a reason why these cities are the cities everyone wants to go to.

Which place are you planning on visiting next?

Italy tomorrow. I am trying to convince my Mum and Dad that China or Singapore should be our next destination, but I’m not sure I’m getting through to them. Would also love to visit Lebanon and Nicaragua. And go skiing in Canada. And see the pyramids in Egypt. And visit the big cities in Russia, Eastern Europe is a region that I am more and more fascinated about. I wish I had all the money in the world, or the guts to travel without any money at all. There’s just so many places I want to see.

And that concludes part 1. NOW I need to pack.

hey, you.

Well, still not finished with these essays, so I though we could do something fun while I’m reading and writing myself to an early death. Yes, you guessed it: a Q&A round. I loooove talking about myself, I just need a question to get started.  So if you’re up for it, then let’s do it. Don’t know what to ask me about, well, something in the lines of:  How many countries have you visited? What is your favourite fruit? Which book made you cry lately?  What is your favorite place on earth? Coffee or Tea? Why did you start to blog? +++

So, ASK AWAY.

the answer is yes

Q: If you could be any animal, which would it be and why?

A: I would be a bird, an eagle I think, so I could fly around and look down on the world and feel free.

Q:  where did you buy the dress you used on May 17th?

A: H&M. :)

Q Are you travelling anywhere this summer?

A: Had loads of plans involving Paris, Greece and Roskilde, but right now I’m not sure. Will spend a week in Switzerland and one in Sweden together with the family, but other than that I hope to spend as much time as possible in Kristiansand at home or at our summer house. Haven’t been home since November, so it is about time.

Q:  What is your dream job (once you’ve finished studying)? / What do you want to be when you grow up?

A: I actually don’t know, and that’s my biggest problem as of right now. Maybe a journalist or something involving pr management. Or fashion. I would’ve loved to work as a journalist in Vogue or i:D. Only the future will tell though..

Q: Which books would you recommend for a person who wants to prepare herself/himself for studying psychology?

A: The book which is a part of the introductory course is quite good (I really enjoyed reading in it up until I had to study for the exam): Psychology by Passer, Smith, et al.

Q: What type of camera do you use?

A: Canon G11.

Q: Can you make an “in-my-bag”-post?

A: Already done it right here. Do you want another one?

Q: What’s on the top of your wish list?

A: Canon 550d, Chanel 2.55 or Alexander Wang’s Diego.

Q: What are your plans for the autumn?

A: Continue studying English Literature, enjoying my life and stop worrying about the future.

Q: What is your dream job today?

A: Journalist? Rock star? Famous fashion photographer? I want it all, and at the same time I want nothing. Tough.

Q: What are your plans for the future concerning school and studying?

A: I am quitting political science, continuing to study English Literature and thinking about starting on a bachelor in Media Studies (medievitenskap på godt norsk).

Familien eier leiligheten.

Q: Can you tell us something about what you are studying? How many books do you need to read? Are the lectures any good?

A: English literature is a really fascinating subject, which goes into depths about different time periods, culture, history, etc. I’ve had both good and bad lecturers, but mostly good ones. The amount of books vary from subject to subject, in Victorian literature this semester we have 6 novels and 8 (I think) poems + a small book on the era itself.

Q: Sneak peak in your closet please..?

A: Just need to be a neat freak first. ;)

Q: skarrer du på r’en?

A: Jepp. Skikkelig sørlandsdialekt.

Q: What is your most expensive garment, pair of shoes, bag?

A: I believe that would be my Burberry trench, Acne boots and Marc Jacobs bag. All well used items. Good investments in other words.

Q: How tall are you?

A: 1.73cm.

Q: What’s your favorite fruit?

A: MANGO!

Q: Where in the world do you want to live (something more original than Paris or London)?

A: New York? No, I don’t want to settle down one place and live there for the rest of my life. I dream of travelling and want to live a couple of months (or more) in Tokyo, New York, Paris, Prague and Jerusalem among others.

Q: What is your favorite room in the apartment?

A: Well, it’s not that many rooms to choose from, and while I spend most of my time in the living room/kitchen, I must say that I am very fond of my bedroom. At home in Kristiansand (where I have more rooms to choose from), I love the library.

Q: Do you play any instruments?

A: my voice? My song teacher always told me “your voice is the finest instrument in the world”.

Q: NY or LA?

A: Both?

Q: I know your studying two things at the same time, but what kind of grades do you get from that? Must be hard to get good grades when you study that many subjects and have the schedule that you do, how do you manage?

A: It is.. I get OK grades, some good, some not so good, but it is a lot, which is why I am dropping out of political science (hiiiiigh school drop out..). I’d rather have excellent grades on all my exams, than Cs (or Ds.. :/).

Q: What’s your favorite film and book?

A: Favorite book&movie: Ensemble C’est Tout by Anna Gevalda. But I also enjoy Anne Rice’s vampire series, the James Bond movies, Star Wars (mainly the 3 first ones) and Animal Farm by George Orwell.

Q: Most handsome celebrity?

A: Clichee I know but.. Johnny Depp. Big fan of Colin Farrell and Jude Law as well though.

Q: I love your hair, how do you make it look like that (its naturally that lovely, or what? :P)

A: Very little. Head&shoulder shampoo, no conditioner, some hair spray now and then and a visit to my hairdresser twice a year.

Q: What’s your favourite recipe (i think food says a lot about a person haha) ?

A: At this moment: Pasta salad: pasta + avocado + apples + cherry tomatoes + hot dogs.

Q: Where do you plan on travelling next?

A: Kristiansand. Then Switzerland. Then Sweden. Then possibly Amsterdam. And in October: Hawaii.

Q: Do you have a favourite drink?

A: As a matter of fact, I do. Lynchburg Lemonade.

Q: Do you hate English linguistics as much as me (in case you learn them as part of your BA)?

A: Hated it, then loved it, then I hated it again, and now I like it.

Q: How do you acquire all your knowledge about fashion?

A: I read magazines, blogs, books about fashion and I try to talk (and listen) to people who know a thing or two about it. The internet is my friend.

Q: Which blogs are your favorites?

A: The ones listed right here.

Q: How many tattoos do you have? Can you show us pictures?

A: The answer is one, and yes you can see it. Here you go:

Q: Which city in Norway is your personal favorite?

A: My hometown: Kristiansand. ;)

Q: What is the worst thing you know?

A: Snakes. Snakes. Snakes. Snakes on a plane. Snakes in Indiana Jones. Snakes in Medusa’s hair.

Q: What annoys you in your everyday life?

A: Mess. Which is sort of a bad thing, because I tend to be quite messy when I’m in a hurry, and when I get home and down to earth and all that, I get mad at myself because the apartment looks like sh**.

Q: What makes you happy?

A: Ultimate happiness: unexpected visit from someone I like. Never fails. (except maybe at 5am when I’m tired and need sleep) Chocolate works too.

Q: Do you have any potential boyfriends in your life at the moment?

A: Sadly, I don’t.

woah

0900 alarm rings again. wake up. eat breakfast. check my email. watch disney channel.
1000-1800 something important like school, shopping, meetings, coffee dates, watch TV, work-out  +++
1800-0200 watch TV and surf the web. And contemplate how I can make myself watch less TV. TV slave.

WHO DO YOU LIVE WITH? one of my best friends from high school; Ingeborg.

CAN YOU SHOW US ANY PICTURES OF YOUR APARTMENT ? Already made a post about it: here.

FAVORITT KAFEER I OSLO? Bugges på Grünerløkka, Bare Jazz på Grensen, Colletts cafe på St.Hanshaugen, Kaffebrenneriet på Bislett.

Josefine:
didn’t you live with someone else before? Yes, I did. She moved out last July, when I caught her in bed with my boyfriend. She also stole my bestfriend and my TV. Haven’t spoken to her since.

2. HVILKE UTESTEDER I OSLO ANBEFALER DU? Fisk&Villt, Blå, The Villa, Emil&Samuel (spesielt om sommeren).

Vibeke:

Mausumi:
HOW DO YOU MANAGE TO SURVIVE (AND BUY SO MANY THINGS) WITHOUT WORKING, AND STILL PAY YOUR RENT? I don’t actually pay any rent at the moment, we own the apartment, and since I’m studying both english literature and political science at the same time I quit my job and stopped paying some rent to my dad. So yeah… Still don’t have too much money though, so I’m not sure I would recommend it if one wants to buy clothes and go out and stuff.

LH:
HOW DID YOU AND MA MEET? Through the blog and Chiquita. We discovered we were twins, separated at birth, and became instant BFFs. Kind of cool actually.

HVA ER GAVORITT BUTIKKEN DIN I OSLO? UFF, Zara, Koma, Tonica Vintage, H&M, Fretex Unika.

Charlotte:
I THINK I’VE ALREADY ASKED THIS BUT WHAT CAMERA DO YOU USE? I use Canon G11, and I LOVE it.

WOULD YOU RECOMMEND OSLO AS A CITY TO STUDY IN? Absolutely. Yes.

Rough day today, both for me and my room mate so I thought this would be a perfect opportunity to have another one of those crazy question sessions where you ask whatever you want and I’ll try and answer as a serious (or not) as possible.

I’ve gotten a lot of mails lately concerning school and what I study and how much work it is etc, so I’m going to sit down on Sunday and write a little guide to the subjects I study and how it works for me (in Norwegian). Saves me a lot of work (instead of having to answer each mail personally) and then you all get your answers. So school questions will be answered on Sunday, right now you can ask me about anything else. Everything else.

Go.

In 2004 I started to write down what books I read in order to keep track of them all. Since 2006 I have gathered them here instead of in my notebook and they serve as a reminder of how I should read more and compete to beat my old “record”. You can find the complete list here.
